Summer Term

In English lessons this term we examine traditional tales such as The Three Little Pigs, Jack & Beanstalk and The Billy Goats Gruff. We  look at the viewpoint from which the stories are told.

We use a collection of emotional short film clips as a stimulus for writing  film narratives.

We revisit poetry looking at narrative poems such as The Highwayman.

We continue to learn maths everyday.  Lessons always have an element of mental maths work as well as written activities.  Children spend this term consolidating and extending their understanding.

Children enjoy looking at the different life cycles of plants and animals.  They practically experience these by raising butterflies and chicks from eggs.  Mill Cottage Farm Experience provide us with a 7 egg incubator, which we keep for  a month. In that time the children will see the eggs hatch and the chicks develop.  Keep an eye on the progress of our chicks via the web-cam.  Look out on this website for the link.

Our topic this term has a history and geography focus.  It looks at the question; How did Guildford grow ? We make visits to the town centre, castle and museum to study changes over time.  The historical development is further explored through studies of key buildings and the children's understanding of all this work is communicated in a PowerPoint presentation.

Using presentation software, the children create a series of information slides about the local area, which include the use of hyperlinks. They custom animate their presentations then present to the rest of the class.

This term our RE lessons address the question; What do Muslims believe? (A study of the Islamic religion)

In PSHE lessons we explore healthy lifestyle choices. We identify different food groups and plan balanced meals. We discuss the effects of alcohol and smoking on our bodies. We discuss the importance of personal hygiene. We come up with calming down strategies to use when feeling anxious. How do we respond to change/loss or in a difficult situation?

This term we develop our athletic skills working to improve our personal best in running, jumping and throwing.  Some of us will represent the school at the district sports competition, competing against other schools.  Everyone will take part in our own sports day which makes use of a range of our athletic skills.

As well as athletics we take part in the summer sports of cricket and rounders.  PE happens every Monday so kits are needed on this day.

In this term, we learn the vocabulary associated with holidays , the beach and icecreams. The term ends with a French afternoon playing games & ordering icecreams !
