Home Support for Spellings

Learning to spell helps a child to develop a strong connection between the letters and their sounds, and learning high-frequency 'sight words' (i.e. words that cannot easily be sounded out) will assist a child in both their reading and writing.

Research shows that ongoing spelling instruction is effective and produces good results. However, it is often tricky to know how to support your child with their spellings at home.

Here are some strategies, which may be helpful. They are more effective than rote memorisation, as they embed the spelling and help your child to store the information in their long-term memory.

Have a go and try out the different ideas to find the best strategies to suit your child’s learning style.
