Year 3

Welcome to Year 3

We would like to wish you and your child a big, warm welcome to Northmead Junior School. Year 3 is a special stage in your child's education. Importantly, it is a time when they start to grow their social, moral and creative skills as well as develop a real hunger to learn. That's why we hold our school motto of 'Try more, learn more, achieve more!' so close to our hearts. We hope that your child will be very happy this year.

If you have any concerns, please come and chat to us after school (check with the school office first to make sure we are available).

Follow the links at the side of this page to find out what  we will be studying each term in Year 3.

There are three classes in Year 3 taught by Mrs Backhurst, Miss Ramsay and Miss Lockie.

Routines and Reminders

At the beginning of everyday we choose someone to be the ‘Star of the day’. They are the teacher’s helper for the day and have lots of important responsibilities.

They have responsibility for giving out letters in class.
They hand out worksheets in class.
They make sure we are lined up properly for assembly and at home time.
They always go first in the line.

PE takes place on Wednesday afternoons - please ensure your child's kit is in school on this day.

If you want to bring something in for 'Show and Tell' make sure you bring something  that we can all learn from.

Teaching Sets

English and Maths are taught in class bases. We teach in ability sets for guided reading and spelling.

Spelling

Children will take part in a daily spelling lesson using a scheme called ‘The Oxford Read Write Inc’ spelling programme. Children will be set for this lesson according to their spelling ability. This is a daily session which covers all of the spelling requirements of the  National Curriculum and uses a proven approach underpinned by phonics, which includes preparation for the statutory spelling assessments in England.  Spelling rules and concepts will be introduced by aliens from an exciting online spelling planet, and children will then take part in a range of lively active tasks.
