Spring Term

English

In Literacy this year, Year 3 are focusing on developing a ‘Talk for Writing’ approach. This is a powerful learning concept developed by Pie Corbett, an English educational trainer, writer, author and poet. Children's creativity and writing skills are unlocked through the art of storytelling. This  approach enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version.

Maths

This year we are developing our maths teaching inspired by the Singapore approach.

In our lessons children are encouraged to physically represent mathematical concepts. Objects and pictures are used to demonstrate and visualise abstract ideas, alongside numbers and symbols.

Mathematical concepts are explored in a variety of representations and problem-solving contexts to give pupils a richer and deeper learning experience.

Science

We complete a study of plants during this term.  This links well to our study of Rainforests.

We enjoy a visit to Wisley Gardens to enrich our learning.

History

Our history focus this term is the Maya of Central America

Geography

We study the location of Belize as a base from which to explore the rainforests.

We involve children in an exciting role play, taking them through the process of booking and boarding a flight with Northmead Airlines.

PSHE

We consider our responsibilities such as; what we need to be healthy and safe, and how to learn effectively.

In addition, the year group take part in an enterprise scheme.  We discuss the work of charities and how we might like to support a charity.  Then the children work to produce a product which they then advertise and sell to the school community in order to raise money for their charity.

Music

We enjoy our weekly music lessons during which we sing and play instruments.

We also listen to and appraise a range of pieces from a variety of musical genre.

Computing

This term we develop our touch typing skills so that we can use computers more effectively and word process documents with efficiency.

RE

In  RE we consider the questions; Why do Christians worship Jesus Christ?

Why do Christians share communion?

We discuss what happened at Easter and what matters most to Christians.

PE

We continue to take part in the sports of Basketball, Netball, Rugby, dance and gymnastics.

Topic

Our second topic is the colourful and exciting; "Who's in the rainforest?" during which we study an area of the rainforest in America. The children will learn about the human and physical geography of this area and will investigate plants as part of their science learning. Following this we will learn about the Ancient Maya.
